The Dark Side of Social Media: The Cautionary Tale

Social media, in this day and age, provides incredible opportunities for people in terms of interaction, learning, and earning. Individuals have the chance to create personal brands, educate others, and become entrepreneurs. Creative people often seek a larger audience, which is available on platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and TikTok, and create means of earning. However, alongside these advantages, there are also stark disadvantages, such as scamming and the abuse of relationships over the internet.

People with ill intentions have started targeting active social media users, seeking to obtain their personal information or involve them in fraudulent acts. For example, some claim to offer jobs to Facebook users and ask for personal information, only to use it for malicious purposes

One alarming scenario involves individuals who, after being deceived, find themselves facing serious legal charges, including blasphemy. For instance, a young man was chatting on WhatsApp when he became the target of online accusations. He was approached by a woman in a job-seeker group who sent him inappropriate images and later denied sending them, leading him to mistakenly share the content. This misstep resulted in his arrest on blasphemy charges, illustrating how easily someone can be drawn into a dangerous situation due to manipulation and deceit.

The effects of such events can be devastating. Individuals may lose everything, endure legal struggles that push them to the brink of despair, and some may even face imprisonment for blasphemy. The mishandling of social networking sites in such situations also highlights the importance of being extra cautious when using the internet.

This cautionary tale serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance while using social media. While social media can be helpful in many ways, it also has negative aspects that can lead to serious trouble.

Lastly, while social networks can assist people in a variety of ways, including building connections and earning, they can also lead to grave problems such as legal action and scams. People’s online activities should always protect their privacy, and they should never expose themselves needlessly.
