Spain won their first World Cup title, defeating England. During the trophy ceremony, Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales kissed Spain player Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her consent. She has filed a complaint over the unsolicited kiss by Luis Rubiales. This sparked outrage throughout Spain.
The 46-year-old Luis Rubiales has been provisionally barred from all football activity for an initial 90 days by FIFA while it is investigating his conduct at last month’s Women’s World Cup final in Sydney.
The damage caused to the values of Spanish football and other sports as a whole has been enormous. The Spanish football federation (RFEF) has apologised for this “enormous damage” caused by the actions of its suspended president, Luis Rubiales.
Spain’s Football Federation has fired head coach Jorge Vilda, and Montse Tome has been named as his replacement, becoming the first woman to be head coach of Spain. Considered a close ally of Rubiales, Vilda has been under fire since last year after 15 players staged a mutiny calling for his resignation because of what they said were inadequate coaching methods and conditions.
There were people who wanted a change in leadership. They wanted Luis Rubiales and Jorge Vilda gone. Now let’s see which way the wind blows.
